What are veneers?

Veneers are a specialized type of dental prosthetic designed for cosmetic dentistry. They are most commonly made from porcelain ceramic, but can also be made from resin, in some cases. Veneers are wafer-thin, built to “cap” teeth and cover up a variety of cosmetic issues, including chips, stains, unevenly spaced, discolored, or gapped teeth.

understanding the process

how are veneers placed?

The veneer placement process is quite simple at Kissing Camels Family Dentistry. First, Dr. Boals will perform a comprehensive oral exam to ensure that you are a good candidate for veneers. Then, he will clean and numb your mouth, and prepare your teeth by removing a very thin layer of enamel. This layer is equal in thickness to the your veneers, and is removed so that the veneers fit perfectly.

Images and molds are taken of your mouth and sent to an outside dental lab, where your veneers will be manufactured. When your veneers arrive at our office near Fillmore, you’ll come back for your final appointment. Your mouth will be cleaned and disinfected, and Dr. Boals will check the fit and finish of each veneer, to make sure they look perfect. Then, using dental cement, the veneers are placed permanently, completing the procedure and giving you a brand new smile.

Benefits of

Porcelain veneers

  • Veneers look and feel natural, so nobody will be able to distinguish your veneers from the rest of your smile.
  • The only thing you have to do to care for your veneers is remember to brush and floss as you normally would.
  • The veneers treatment process takes only two quick appointments and provides beautiful results.
  • Veneers are non-invasive, with no oral surgery required.

Committing to Your Smile

Can Veneers Be Removed?

No. Once they have been placed, veneers should be considered a permanent part of your smile, and they should not be removed. This is because Dr. Cody Boals must remove enamel from your teeth while preparing them for veneers.

About 0.5mm of enamel must be removed to prepare your teeth for veneers. This is done so that your veneers can fit into your mouth without adding any bulk to your teeth, or changing your bite significantly.

Exposing new enamel before placing veneers also helps the veneers bond to the tooth more effectively once they’ve been applied. Once your veneers have been applied to your teeth, they will be just as strong as they were before they were trimmed.

However, this enamel cannot be restored if you change your mind about veneers. It’s removed permanently. Once you get veneers, the procedure is not reversible. If your veneers were to be removed, your teeth would be very weak and susceptible to further damage and complications.
For all intents and purposes, veneers are permanent. They cannot and should not be removed from your mouth once they have been placed. If you are not comfortable with this, you may wish to look into an alternative cosmetic dental treatment such as dental bonding, which is reversible.

The Importance of Proper Care

Can Veneers Be Stained or Whitened?

Whether or not veneers can be stained depends on the material used to create your veneers. Resin veneers are made of a dental composite material. They are inexpensive and fairly durable but can be stained over time if you do not care for your veneers properly. However, regular brushing and flossing is usually enough to prevent stain buildup.

Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, are made from a completely non-porous ceramic material. This means that stains cannot build up on porcelain veneers, so your smile will continue to look great for years to come. However, you should still take care to brush properly and avoid stain buildup. This is because the teeth that do not have veneers can become stained, which may affect your smile.

Neither type of veneer can be whitened traditionally, as peroxide-based whiteners do not work on the resin or porcelain material. In some cases, though, stained resin veneers can be buffed and polished to remove a thin layer of material to reveal the whiter resin underneath.

Understanding Affordability

How Much Do Veneers Cost?

The cost of veneers varies widely based on the material you choose for your veneers, the number of veneers you need, your oral health and a number of other factors. Because of this, it’s difficult to provide you with an accurate cost estimate without an appointment at Kissing Camels Family Dentistry.

Wondering if veneers are right for you, or if you can afford them? The best way to find out is by scheduling a cosmetic consultation with Dr. Cody Boals. Dr. Boals can examine your mouth, help you explore your options for cosmetic dentistry, and find out if veneers are a good option for you.
