painless & thorough
root canal therapy
Despite many myths and misconceptions about root canal therapy, the treatment is actually minimally-invasive and is often the best way to save your natural teeth. Dr. Boals at Kissing Camels Family Dentistry has years of experience performing gentle root canals and is here to help if you are suffering from an infected tooth in West Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods, Manitou Springs, and Mountain Shadows.
What Is Root Canal Therapy?
Why Would I Need It?
Root canal therapy is used to restore and preserve your tooth after it has become infected. Tooth infections are usually caused by tooth decay, but can also be caused by impact injuries and cracked teeth.
When the enamel and dentin of the tooth wear away, the interior root and pulp are exposed to oral bacteria. The tissue then becomes infected, and will eventually die without treatment, resulting in tooth loss. A root canal is used to open up the tooth, remove the infected material, and cover it up with a crown, to preserve the natural structure and eliminate pain and discomfort.
The Root Canal Therapy Process
The process of having a root canal is actually quite similar to having a filling placed. First, Dr. Boals will numb and clean the area. Then, a small opening is made in the affected tooth, using a dental drill.
After this, Dr. Boals will begin removing infected tooth pulp and material. Once the infected material has been removed, the inside of the tooth is disinfected and rinsed. Dr. Boals will then use a rubber-like substance called gutta-percha to fill the inside of the tooth and preserve its structure. Finally, your tooth will be covered with a temporary filling or crown until a custom crown is manufactured to fit perfectly in your mouth.
The Benefits of
Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy has a number of benefits. Here are just a few of them:
- Relieves pain and discomfort – Infected nerve pulp can cause an excruciating toothache. Getting a root canal allows for this material to be removed, eliminating the source of your pain and discomfort.
- Save time and money – If you don’t get a root canal, your tooth can eventually decay to the point of total tooth loss. This means you’ll need a partial denture, a dental bridge, or an implant to replace the missing tooth. All of these procedures are much more expensive and time-consuming compared to a simple root canal.
- Restore your bite and smile – It may be hard to chew with an infected tooth, which can interfere with your day-to-day life. Getting a root canal will allow you to smile, chew, and eat normally with no pain or discomfort.
